What's the deal on this. Hawaii also claims this.
Per the State of Hawaii web site the southernmost point of the U.S. is Ka Lae (South Point) on the island of Hawaii.

Re: Southernmost point in us
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 12:55 PMI think the difference is the word "Continental". They may BOTH very well make the same claim, and are both correct. Key West may be the Southernmost point in the Continental U.S. whereas if you add Hawaii it takes the overall US position. -

Re: Southernmost point in us
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 1:13 PMIn 1982 The mayor and 5 business men declared independence and war on the U.S. due to the fact that the U.S established military roadblocks on the Overseas highway (the bridge) to stop illegal drug trafficing, but it hurt the tourism. Thus the "Conch Republic" was formed. The roadblock was discontinued and the Key West economy was saved.
So accarding to the locals they are their OWN republic.

Re: Southernmost point in us
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 1:06 PMno I mean Key West and Hawaii are both islands. So even though Key West is an island is it still considered part of the continental US.
sorry to split hairs, but I'm at work on a very boring conference call.
