I've never been there, though I've been told by many that it's the place to go.
I'm particularly interested in the lighthouses nearby, and the sea-shuttle to the Dry Tortugas. Anyone have some helpful info on how I can visit, where I can stay and when the best time is to access the Tortugas?

Re: Key West
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 11:09 AMI was just in Key West back in May. I go every year but this time I finally made it to the Dry Totugas. The best way to go is by the Fast Cat speed catamaran. It's still a long trip (2hours) but they provide food and tour guides and you can even spend time there camping on the island.
Their off season is now but it's really HOT! I'd say after Memorial Day too Labor Day would be the less crowded.
As far as lodging, there are many hotels, and B&B's right in the heart of Key West. Depends on how partial you are to the active nightlife of their famed "Duval st". The rates are a lot cheaper in the summer months and of course the farther you are from the main areas the cheaper the lodging is.
A good website for any and all info for Key West is: www.see-keywest.com -

Re: Key West
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 11:21 AMBasically I'm the kind of person wyho would rather avoid the locals in mass, though I may be interested in embedding myself with particular locals.
Meaning, I'd much rather find someone who lives there, and stay with them, as opposed to finding a hotel. And if I couldn't find someone, I'd probably just try to stay somewhere I could camp and avoid all locals.
I'm not interested in the nightlife if it involves large amounts of people or alchohol. If it were say, a group of friends hanging out on the beach, I'd be ok.
Have they finished their upgrading of the Dry Tortugas to allow camping again? I'd hate to only go out there for one day.
